Pergamum is about fourty miles north of Smyrna. The city is known for its temple to Zeus, who is called Soter Theos, the Saviour God. It was the first city to erect a temple to Emperor Augustus. Obviously, this imperial cult poses a threat to the Christian Church, whose members only worship Christ as Lord and King.
Jesus commends the Pergamene Christians for being faithful witnesses in such a dark, idolatrous environment. BUT the church needs to expel those who are stumbling blocks to other believers. The offenders need to repent. Those who are 'victorious' in spite of 'the offenders' will be blessed with:
